Dear Local 1-S member,
Let me start by saying your union, Local 1-S RWDSU, has your back! We have been fighting tirelessly for you throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and throughout our scheduled contract negotiations this spring to ensure you have EVERY PROTECTION. That has included the union performing our own temperature checks at stores where Macy's has refused -- to ensure YOUR SAFETY personally, fighting for a reopening agreement -- to put YOUR HEALTH first, and working with each and every one of our members to make sure you have the resources you needed and continue to need throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
As you know Macy's has been making unilateral decisions and announcing them. Shockingly, today is no different, and it's inexcusable. YOU have a UNION CONTRACT that provides certain protections to ensure you, your job, and your work environment are safe.
Today, Macy's is announcing that it is cutting 650+ jobs from OUR UNION represented stores. Job cuts when you have a UNION, don't work that way. We wanted to write to you as soon as we heard the news, and remind you that no matter what the company says in the media, YOUR UNION will fight for you, and that WHAT THEY SAY IS NOT FINAL.
Our negotiations team has been hard at work on securing a FAIR CONTRACT, Macy's demanded that we come to the table in a time of grave uncertainty, and their announcement of job cuts today shows just how uncertain they are about the future. YOUR UNION IS CERTAIN THAT WE WILL FIGHT TOOTH AND NAIL TO PROTECT YOU, YOUR JOB AND YOUR WORKPLACE -- PERIOD.
Despite today’s alarming news, I do have some good news to share on our contract as well. We won Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a paid holiday during the contract negotiations. Then as Macy’s always does after fighting the union, they announced MLK Day as a new company-wide holiday. When we fight, we win, and I am confident we will have more wins to share with you soon on our new contract.
If you have any questions about today's news, contract negotiations, or any health or safety questions we urge you to call or email us, please reach out to Mike Jones, Vice President Local 1-S at Michael@Local1sRWDSU.com or (914)562-1824. To get the most up to date information, make sure that we have your cell phone number and email address, please send it to Melina@local1srwdsu.com. Stay tuned to Local 1-S Macy’s Workers on Facebook and local1srwdsu on Instagram for updates.
You union has your back, and we won't back down to a company that's pandering to the press at this critical time.
President Local 1-S RWDSU
